I was gonna write an article on yearning, comparing it to Wuthering Heights (where I, a crybaby, also did not shed a single tear) and Heated Rivalry (watched 7 times, cried everytime), but then decided to do some research before it and I'm glad I did because this article basically captured everything I wanted to say, but funnier. I particularly loved "Heathcliff and his slutty little earring burst into Cathyโs flesh-coloured bedroom" so thank you for unknowingly stealing my thoughts but making it better
i loved reading this!! i feel like i want to underline what you said about not wanting to be spoon-fed by our media. let there be room for interpretation and conversations!! treat us like adults who can form our own opinions pls x
Thank you so much ๐ I really feel it so strongly - Iโm so fed up of watching TV shows that tell us so explicitly whatโs going on, sometimes several times over, rather than letting us figure it out as it goes. I know itโs so that we can double screen, but I donโt want to give into my worst compulsions! I want to be *captivated*!!
My thoughts exactly!! Heated rivalry feel so real, since it puts the characters at the centre and you can actually connect with them. Wuthering Heights felt like it used the storyline as an excuse to make an aesthetically pleasing film with famous people in, so it totally abandoned the meaning of the film and gave us nothing..
I want to frame this essay. I just (reluctantly) watched WH yesterday after putting it off until the last minute, and I, like you, knew not to expect a faithful adaptation but was hoping for some yearningโฆ. Nope. Not even a little. I cry at commercials. At muppets singing songs. At instagram reels featuring tiny spiders and people complementing strangersโฆ but in WH, I felt nothing. Was wondering if something was wrong with me until Wolf Parade played on my drive home and I was pulled gloriously and happily back into the real yearning that was everywhere in HR. Thanks for this piece! ๐๐
Iโm really with you here . I felt absolutely flat at the end of it . And the same thought flashed in my mind as the flashback montage flashed on the screen! Spoon-fed and slapped in the face is how I felt .
Heated Rivalry had a flash back scene too BUT omg how different were they in flooding me with emotions! The restaurant scene with Shane and Rose, the acting when Shane visualises Ilya - the yearning - waaah (Hudson with those microexpressions - with NO overacting - thank god!! {Margot, jacob and Emerald should take notes!}; the stunning cinematography/lighting; the music changing when Shane realises Rose knows - absolute masterpiece<3 Compare that with Wuthering Heights - lazy storytelling, melodramatic overacting, no nuance or respect for the audience to organically feel. Thank god Jacob Tierney stuck to his vision and moved to Crave so he could make this wonderful show that respects his audience. Hopefully the success of HR will lead to more quality television, realistic storylines (Show don't spoon-feed Tell), casting unknown actors and with executives keeping out of the creative process. Sorry for the ramble - as you can see I am in total agreement with the author regarding HR and WH.
Tell me about it!!! The HR flashback is SO well done, so delicate and tender. Perfect storytelling IMO. That restaurant scene is an emotional triumph! agree with you wholeheartedly ๐

I feel this so strongly! (Also I have listened to Bad Things by Caillin Russo about 1000 times since watching that final ep)

Absolutely! It felt so forced and kind ofโฆ disrespectful of the audience?! Like we wouldnโt notice we were being spoon fed!
Thank you!! This is the heated rivalry discourse I've been looking for and also so happy to know about Tonsil Hockey.
You are so welcome!! Cannot recommend tonsil hockey enough, itโs so funny but still so sincere!
MASTERPIECE
Had to speak my truth!!!!
